Another superb choice for Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series, which brings back classic jazz albums in remastered 180-gram vinyl form in deluxe gatefold packaging. Recorded in Rudy Van Gelder’s famed New Jersey studio, this set of six Wayne Shorter compositions was played by Blakey and Shorter with pianists Bobby Timmons and Walter Davis Jr. and bassist Jymie Merrit: “Ping Pong,” “The Black Sliders,” “United,” “Look at the Birdie,” “Master Mind” and the title track. Though often overlooked, this 1961 recording (which wasn’t released ’til 1970) is one of the finest albums Blakey made with his Jazz Messengers…check it out!
